Post-gathering CPR class offered

by admin last modified 2004-04-29 04:55 PM

Garth Kahl will lead an optional CPR class the day after the West Coast Medic Gathering - this is the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

This is the Basic Life Support (BLS) course required for many nurses, doctors, EMTs and other health care professionals working the field. Topics covered include assessing breathing and pulse in the unresponsive patient, removal of Foreign Body Airway Obstructions (victim choking), and infant, child and adult CPR/rescue breathing. Also included is information on the causes and symptoms of strokes and heart attacks as well as the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Those who successfully compete the course will receive a certification card from the AHA, valid for 2 years and a prerequisite for many jobs and training programs. This course is a good complement the street medic trainings already presented by Black Cross and others.

Date: Mon., May 31 10:00am-3:00pm

Location: TBA

Cost: $25 for course fees, payable on the day of the course (covers equipment use and certification through AHA and Portland Community College). $10 for required book, "BLS for Healthcare Providers." Applicants must obtain book before the course, by AHA requirement. Books will be for sale on Sat. and Sun during the conference for those planning to take the course.

We must have a min. of 7 applicants to hold the course.

Instructor: Garth Kahl is a street medic, EMT-B, WFR, member of the collective Medicine for Activists Seeking Health and Healing (MASHH) and a trainer with Cascadia Health Educators. He is facilitating this course especially for street medics wishing to build or refresh their skills in this area.

Pre-registration required: For more information or to register please contact Garth at gkahl@peak.org, (520) 886-4217. Deadline for registration is Thursday, May. 27th.
